EDIT- Apparently we did have the Soy Chorizo that was Vegan. Catherine corrected me. The research that I did on the product was from old articles and I apologize for that. Therefore, I’ve updated the pictures used and removed a paragraph from my original post regarding ingredients.
While I’ve never eaten real Chorizo before & honestly have only seen it at Chipotle, I’m so excited about this find. I swear that you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between fake and real… it was that good. Even the price is appealing at $1.99.
It’s packaged in a casing like real sausage but it’s actually a plastic tubing that you can’t eat. Cut the tubing and dump it into a pan with some olive oil and you’re good to go. Easy enough! It didn’t take that long to heat up/brown a bit. FYI- it won’t mold like a burger so don’t even try it!
I haven’t dabbled with many imitation meats because they kind of creep me out. With that said, I was definitely skeptical to try this stuff. Turns out that it’s so close to the real thing that it’s almost scary. I didn’t even think twice while devouring a 2nd helping. It has a ground meat consistency that’s slightly chewy and the spiciness of authentic chorizo sausage that makes the taste almost spot on. In my head, I was comparing the soy chorizo to ground meat since I’ve never had real chorizo before.
All in all, I can’t wait to cook some more meals with this soy chorizo. I’m thinking breakfast burritos (or any burrito for that matter), chili, nachos, and this hash! I have a feeling this may become a staple in my house.. maybe I can even get the boyfriend to try it 😉
I didn’t plan on making a post about this stuff but I felt the need to share because it’s a total game changer!
Have any of you tried Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo?
If so, what did you think?
[This is not a sponsored post. I paid for my Soy Chorizo (well, Catherine did) with my own (her own) money and have never been contacted by Trader Joe’s to review their products.]
