Veggie Journey

After much internal struggle & deliberation over the last few weeks, I’ve come to the conclusion that transitioning to a vegan diet is not for me at this point in time. I plan on revisiting veganism again in a few months. In the meantime, I’m going to continue to focus on my vegetarian journey. suddenly uou knowI still believe in the vegan way which is why I’m feeling terribly hypocritical, but I know it’s for the best. I need to listen to my body, even if I don’t want to, and I haven’t been. My body is telling me that this is too much all at once. I really wanted to succeed with this lifestyle. I still do. So, maybe focusing on vegetarianism for the rest of the year is the right way to approach this transition… for me at least. That way, I can continue to research and eventually come up with a better plan that will actually make me succeed once I decide to try veganism again.

I feel like I’ve failed which I know is silly but I can’t help it. I need to accept that everyone has different needs. Mine are not being met right now which is affecting what is most important to me: marathon training. I can’t be feeling run-down 24/7 while training. These last few weeks have been a struggle as far as energy and motivation goes. While going to the RD next week will definitely help, I think I need to take a step back, slow down, and re-focus. Take things one step at a time. Master vegetarianism before trying to go full blown vegan.create healthy habitsI still plan on experimenting with vegan recipes as I’ve truly been enjoying trying out so many new things. I want to continue to make some vegan choices while out and about as well. However, I don’t want to feel guilty anymore if I make the wrong decision. If it’s vegan, great! If not, I’m not going to beat myself up over it.

This was not an easy decision but I needed to be honest with myself. My main focus at this point is getting back on track with marathon training -> Chicago is TOO soon & I’m getting nervous!

Good for you that you came to a conclusion that was right for YOU. I had to do something very similar recently – with running, not diet.

Maybe it was hard because you tried to tackle too much at once? What if you just gradually eased into it? You already have the foundation with your vegetarian lifestyle, maybe you could start by giving up one animal product, then when you get used to that, give up another, etc? Then it won’t seem as hard or be as much of a shock to your system. Just a thought!!

    1. It was hard but I just needed to be honest about it. I already feel better about myself. I think I need to master vegetarianism (I’m still eating seafood right now but not that often) before attempting vegan again!

Some journeys take longer than others. The important part is you are in tune with yourself and doing what feels right for you.

I think you made the right decision by listening to your body. Even as a vegetarian, you can still choose to eat vegan certain days. There is no reason to feel like you need to fit into a diet “mold”. It seems like everyone today is something- vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, paleo, gluten free, etc… imho, the best thing to do is eat what makes you feel comfortable and don’t feel like you need an all or nothing approach. I definitely think meeting with the nutrition is a great idea though- everyone could use a look at their eating habits when training and see what they could improve on.

    1. Thanks for this comment. I definitely fell into the all or nothing approach and it was making me feel really bad about myself. I’m so glad I decided to listen to my body.

  4. Glad you gave it a shot and are figuring out what works for you. I tried vegan and vegetarian and it wasn’t for me, but I see people who do well with it. Everyone needs something different. One thing I always say is that it’s good to find a lifestyle for you, but to follow it about 80-90% of the time. Like for me, I always say I am Paleo -ish because I try to follow that lifestyle but I need pizza and sushi in my life or I think I might die. You’re one step closer to figuring out what your body needs!

  5. Don’t think of it as a failure for not staying vegan. It is hard. If you want to do it in the future, I’m sure you will be able to.
